RevolutionMuslim created a slideshow of the two creators of the show as well as others who have used religious figures in media. Behind it was a sermon that threatened death to those who have defamed Muhammad.
The first part of the 200th special used the name of the prophet many times, but never showed his likeness. There was always a censor bar covering his body. Then RevolutionMuslim spoke up and protested the episode.
Comedy Central did not take this lightly. For part 2, they bleeped out every instance of the prophet's name. Comedy Central was very careful as to what they were going to include and what needed to get out. The episode aired once at 10PM and hasn't been shown again. The midnight showing was also cut off, as well as usage on South Park Studios.
Matt and Trey allegedly gave Comedy Central the uncut episode without any bleeps and Comedy Central bleeped out the use of the word. However, there was one part of bleeps that are questionable.
At the end of almost every episode, the boys and related characters usually have a message that they learned from the episode. In this particular one, 3 of those messages were bleeped out. They were apparently about intimidation and fear. I'm still not sure if this is all a ruse by South Park's creators, or if Comedy Central really was worried about the possible rammefications of airing the uncut episode.

This is incredible. I've been following this whole thing too and it's mind boggling. I don't care what religion you're part of, you don't intimidate anyone with a death threat. I would have loved to see the episode uncut. I guess at the very least it's providing publicity for Trey and Matt right? Also, what are you doing posting so early in the morning!?
ReplyDeleteAs someone who doesn't really watch South Park on a normal basis but knows about so many episodes and all that are very offensive, it kind of shocks me that Comedy Central is actually fearful of this group that is protesting. I can only wonder why they are listening to their arguments compared to their normal critics, especially since they have critics protest nearly every new episode because of how topical and ridiculous they can be in their episodes. Do you think they are specifically scared of this Muslim group? I can't help but think that, because when it came to other religious mockeries they didn't even second guess their airing of the show. This is an amazing development and I hope you keep us updated because it is the most interesting that South Park has encountered yet.
ReplyDeleteI think it's funny how these extreme "religious" groups act in response to a cartoon. I put religous in quotes because what kind of religion threatens death when someone discusses the prophet? In my opinion, this is what makes some religions a joke. People completely understand what the prophets of their respective religions preach. I'm sure Muhammad wouldn't have threatened death on people who didn't agree with what he was preaching. This whole world is going insane.
ReplyDeleteRight? The character of Jesus even takes his own name in vain and swears in the episode, you still don't see christians getting all up in arms about that.
ReplyDeleteI do think they had to take it seriously because of the recent history related to the muslim religion. Yeah we try to avoid stereotypes, but RM has been linked to Osama and Al-Qaeda and is affiliated with someone on the US wanted list. That's not something I would be taking lightly either.
And the time? Weird, it was like 3 hours after it says it was.
